MONTEVIDEO WEATHER

Best time to visit Montevideo

Montevideo has a humid subtropical climate influenced by the Río de la Plata, bringing warm summers, cool winters, regular sea breezes, and rainfall throughout the year. Located in Uruguay, the capital offers comfortable sightseeing during much of the year, although weather can change quickly because of Atlantic and river influences. Spring and autumn generally provide the most balanced conditions for exploring the Ciudad Vieja, Pocitos, Rambla, Mercado del Puerto, and nearby coastal districts.

Spring, from September through November, brings gradually warmer temperatures, blooming parks, and comfortable walking conditions. It is an excellent season for discovering Montevideo's waterfront, museums, and cultural neighborhoods while avoiding peak summer crowds.

Summer, from December through February, is warm and lively, with beaches such as Pocitos, Buceo, and Carrasco attracting locals and visitors. Afternoon temperatures are moderated by coastal breezes, although occasional heatwaves occur. This is also the busiest season for domestic tourism and travelers combining Montevideo with Punta del Este.

Autumn offers pleasant temperatures, lower humidity, and excellent conditions for gastronomy, wineries, walking tours, and regional excursions. Winter is generally cool rather than severe, with occasional rain, cloudy days, and fewer tourists, making it attractive for cultural trips and lower hotel prices.

The best overall months to visit are October through December and March through April, when temperatures are comfortable and the city is ideal for walking along the Rambla and exploring southern South America.
