Florence has a temperate climate with hot summers, cool winters, and transitional spring and autumn seasons that strongly influence crowd levels, museum demand, hotel prices, and the comfort of walking through the historic center. The city's compact layout means visitors spend considerable time outdoors moving between landmarks such as the Duomo, Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio, Santa Croce, Palazzo Pitti, and Piazzale Michelangelo. Choosing the right season can make a major difference in the overall travel experience.

Spring, from March through May, is one of the most popular times to visit Florence. March can still bring cool mornings, rain, and rapidly changing weather, while April and May become progressively warmer and greener. Gardens such as Boboli and Bardini are especially attractive during this period, and outdoor cafés become more active. Easter and major cultural events can bring substantial crowds, so museum tickets and central hotels should be reserved well in advance.

Summer, from June through August, is hot, sunny, and often humid. July and August are usually the warmest months, and midday temperatures can make long walks through exposed squares and narrow streets tiring. Visitors should schedule major outdoor attractions early, reserve timed museum entries, carry water, and use indoor churches and galleries during the hottest hours. Summer is also one of the busiest seasons, with high hotel prices and strong demand for Tuscany day trips.

Autumn, from September through November, begins with warm conditions and gradually becomes cooler and wetter. September often provides excellent weather for combining Florence sightseeing with vineyard tours, countryside excursions, and evening walks. October is usually mild and attractive, while November brings more rain, shorter days, and fewer visitors. Autumn is also closely associated with harvest season, regional food traditions, and wine tourism across Tuscany.

Winter, from December through February, is cool and generally quieter. Frost is possible, rain is common, and daylight hours are shorter, but snow in central Florence is rare. This season is well suited to museum-focused itineraries, local dining, shopping, and less crowded visits to major landmarks. The best overall periods to visit Florence are generally April through early June and September through October, when temperatures are comfortable and both the city and surrounding Tuscan countryside are especially appealing.
