Athens is surprisingly walkable in its historic core, making it relatively easy to choose a great base. The city is served by a highly efficient Metro system that connects the airport directly to the center and the port of Piraeus.

The most enchanting, albeit most expensive, area to stay is Plaka. Nestled right beneath the Acropolis, this pedestrian-friendly neighborhood is filled with romantic boutique hotels, placing you within minutes of the major archaeological sites and excellent dining.

If you prefer a vibrant, energetic atmosphere with spectacular rooftop views, Monastiraki and Psiri are fantastic choices. These central districts blend ancient ruins with a hip, bohemian vibe, offering trendy cafes, lively bars, and excellent street food right at your doorstep.

For luxury and convenience, the area around Syntagma Square is ideal. It houses the city’s grandest five-star hotels and serves as the main transportation hub. Alternatively, the residential neighborhood of Koukaki offers a more authentic, local feel with stylish Airbnbs just south of the Acropolis.
