Renting a car in Paris is generally not necessary for exploring the city itself, thanks to its outstanding public transportation network that includes the Metro, RER trains, buses, and trams. However, a rental car becomes extremely valuable for travelers planning to explore regions beyond the capital, such as the Loire Valley castles, Normandy, Champagne, Provence, Burgundy, Mont Saint-Michel, and the French Riviera. Driving through the French countryside offers flexibility and access to charming villages, vineyards, and scenic routes that are difficult to reach efficiently by train alone.

The main rental car hubs are located at Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) and Orly Airport (ORY), where major international brands such as Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt, Enterprise, Budget, and National operate large fleets. Renting directly at the airport usually provides the best vehicle availability and more competitive pricing. Smaller rental offices are also available throughout central Paris, including near Gare du Nord and Gare de Lyon, though city-center pickups may involve higher rates and more restrictive parking conditions.

Driving in Paris requires patience and preparation. Traffic can be intense, especially during rush hours, and parking inside the city is expensive and limited. Many central districts also have low-emission regulations, so travelers should verify environmental sticker requirements and vehicle restrictions before driving. French highways, known as autoroutes, are generally excellent but include toll fees.
