Vienna has a temperate continental climate with four distinct seasons, warm summers, cold winters, and transitional spring and autumn weather. March can still feel wintry, while April brings variable weather and May often offers some of the most comfortable sightseeing conditions of the year. Parks and palace gardens become especially attractive, and visitors can comfortably explore Schönbrunn Palace, the historic center, Prater, and outdoor markets with fewer crowds than in midsummer.

Summer (June-August) is warm and can occasionally become hot, with long daylight hours and frequent outdoor events. July and August are generally the warmest months, and afternoon thunderstorms can occur during humid periods. This season is ideal for Danube activities, parks, open-air concerts, and evening dining, although popular attractions can be busy. Winter (December-February) is cold, with short daylight hours, frequent cloudy conditions, and occasional snow. December is particularly popular because of Christmas markets, seasonal concerts, lights, and festive events throughout the city. January and February are quieter and can offer better hotel value. The best overall periods to visit Vienna for mild weather are generally April through June and September through October, while December is one of the most atmospheric times for travelers interested in winter traditions.
