Dakar has a hot semi-arid coastal climate influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, with warm temperatures throughout the year, a long dry season, and a shorter rainy period. Located on the Cap-Vert Peninsula in Senegal, the city benefits from sea breezes that moderate the heat compared with many inland areas of West Africa. Weather conditions influence beach activities, outdoor markets, cultural festivals, ferry crossings, and the best time to explore neighborhoods such as Plateau, Almadies, Ngor, and the coastline around the city.

The dry season, from November through May, is widely considered the best time to visit Dakar. Temperatures are generally warm but more comfortable, humidity is lower, and rainfall is rare. From December through February, the Harmattan can occasionally bring dry and dusty air from the Sahara, although coastal winds often reduce its intensity. The rainy season generally runs from June through October, with August and September often receiving the heaviest rainfall. Showers can be intense but are frequently short, followed by brighter conditions. Humidity is higher, roads may become slower during heavy rain, and some outdoor plans require flexibility. The landscape becomes greener, hotel demand may be lower, and visitors willing to tolerate tropical rain can experience a quieter side of the city.

Dakar can be visited year-round, but November through April offers the most reliable weather for sightseeing and coastal activities. Travelers combining Dakar with other destinations across Africa should remember that West Africa's seasonal patterns differ from those of East and Southern Africa.
